STEM & MATHEMATICS
STEM
At High Wycombe Primary School we aim to provide students with a diverse and engaging curriculum. Students are given a wide range of opportunities to apply their learning across the curriculum in different contexts.
In 2026, we have introduced a specialist STEM program to the school. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The program integrates these key learning areas through a Mathematics focus to provide students with additional support for the introduction of the new Mathematics Curriculum. During classes, students will focus on key numeracy skills and their real-life applications. Students will use manipulatives and visual representations every lesson to explore Mathematical contexts and problem solving. Lessons will ask students to consider 'why?' and 'what if?' to build deep thinking in Mathematics.
The program will also include a lunchtime STEM club. STEM club will focus on engineering and technology skills. Students will be able to access Knex, Lego and robotics equipment during the club sessions.
Mathematics
At High Wycombe Primary School we follow the Shaping Minds explicit maths program. The Shaping Minds program includes Daily Reviews and explicitly taught Maths Hero lessons. Daily Reviews allow students to regularly practice prior learning whilst our explicit lessons introduce new concepts using research based methods.
The Mathematics program takes a concrete-representational-abstract approach to learning. Students are introduced to concepts through manipulatives and taught to use visual representations to build connections across mathematical content. This approach allows us to ensure that all students are supported in their learning and every student feels success in Maths.
In 2026, we have also introduced our Ninja Maths Fluency program (thanks to Serpentine Primary School for sharing this fantastic resource). The fluency program builds students operational skills through 11 levels. Students must answer the questions for their level in the time provided to move up. At each level they pass, they will receive a ribbon (Ninja belt) for their excellent achievement.
High Wycombe Primary School strives to support every student to grow and succeed. For students with a love of Mathematics we also offer STEM as a specialist subject and external Mathematics competitions through the Australian Maths Trust.
