CURRICULUM

Teaching and Learning

At High Wycombe Primary School, we use high impact teaching and learning practices based on current and informed research. We use data from ongoing assessment to reflect on our practices and processes to plan learning opportunities so that children are equipped to deal with the challenges of a changing world.

Students at H.W.P.S all participate in the eight learning areas, as specified by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). These learning areas include:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • The Arts
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Technology
  • Languages

Explicit Instruction

Teachers at H.W.P.S use the Explicit Instruction Model when teaching new content and skills. Explicit Instruction involves directly teaching students the content or skill to be learned, step by step, using clear language.  Teacher modelling and then teacher guidance is followed by scheduled opportunities for practice and checking for understanding.  Student/teacher interaction is very high and student engagement is essential.
